Monday night at the historic Heights fire station on 12th Street was a night to remember for local bakers and those lucky enough to taste their work.

The 2017 Heights Great American Pie Contest was a hit with about 35 pies entered and over 100 hungry residents standing in the back and milling about outside after all the seats were taken said one Houston Heights Association member.

Not everything went to plan, though. One of the celebrity judges no-showed but that may have worked in contestants favor when a fresh Heights resident of only a week stood up and said she had just spent the summer in Europe tasting pies. She was quickly given a spot at the judges table.

The 2017 winners are in two categories:

Hot on the heels of judging the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, I’ve landed another judging gig, the Heights Great American Pie Contest, 6:30 pm Monday at the Heights Fire Station. Other judges: Cleverly Stone, Ken Bridge, Levi Rollins, and restaurateur Lee Ellis. Free to come watch, and like George Jefferson of '70s/'80s hit TV show The Jeffersons, everybody gets a piece of the pie.
